Incident

CITATION FOR MAJOR RUSHIKESH VALLABH BHAI RAMANI OF 23 PUNJAB REGIMENT

IC 66829 F, Major Rushikesh Vallabh Bhai Ramani was commissioned to 23 Punjab Regiment on 11 June 2005. In March 2009, he was posted as the company commander of an infantry company located along the Line of Control passing through  dense forests 10 Kms West of Kupwara  district of Jammu & Kashmir to check and contain infiltration of terrorists from across the Line of Control.
During evening of 06 June 09, Major RV Ramani  received specific inputs about likely infiltration attempt  by  a group of  Pakistani terrorists from across the Line of Control through the forests on night of 06-07 June 09. Based on this input, Major RV Ramani immediately prepared a plan to deploy his troops in search and ambush operations in the area. He personally led his troops to the site along the likely infiltration route.
Towards midnight of 06-07 Jun 09, Major RV Ramani noticed a group of 5 terrorists moving stealthily near Gulab Post 3 Kms inside the Line of Control. Showing extreme alertness and presence of mind, Major RV Ramani immediately reorganised his search and ambush party to take all the terrorists together in the killing zone.
Due to heavy rains and adverse weather conditions, eye contact with the remaining search party was broken and Major RV Ramani who was leading the search party faced the entire infiltrating group alone with his Jawan (buddy- pair).  At about 01:15 AM, 07 June 2009 Major Ramani and the infiltrating group of terrorists saw each other and a heavy exchange of fire started. The terrorists opened heavy fire in an abortive attempt to escape. During the exchange of fire, Major RV Ramani received a burst of 12 bullets in his chest and abdomen. Despite the serious bullet injuries sustained by him, and with total disregard to his personal safety or well being, Major RV Ramani single-handedly continued to fire at and engage the group of said terrorists. Till such time the reinforcements arrived, Major RV Ramani led his party from the front. In spite of bleeding profusely from 12 bullet wounds, he engaged and shot dead three terrorists.
Later, Major RV Ramani succumbed to his injuries and thereby made the supreme sacrifice by laying down his life for defending the honour & safety of and protecting his Motherland.
During the whole incident, Major RV Ramani displayed exceptional courage, extreme daring, devotion beyond call of duty, leadership and bravery of the highest order in the face of the enemy.
With this selfless and heroic act of conspicuous bravery, Major RV Ramani single-handedly foiled and successfully  prevented the infiltration attempt by Pakistani terrorists into Indian territory.
For this act of exemplary courage, commendable valour, exceptional devotion to duty and gallantry, Major RV Ramani was recommended for sena medal and awarded for the “GALLANTRY SENA MEDAL AWARD (Posthumous)” on 26 January 2010 for timely recognition of his sacrifice and contribution to maintain the sovereignty and security of the Motherland.
